WORKING ICE SKATING & TOBOGGANING

The ice-skating rink is 15 X 30 metres long and it has an entry and an exit gate.

Line #1- For Unattended Skaters
Line #2 – For Skaters with Skating Aid.

Skating Flow

This year the work flow has been modified to improve the patron flow from collecting the skates, putting them on and then getting to the entry gate and onto the rink.

Staff in the Rink Area

• 1-2 staff at Skate’s Collection,
• 2-4 Skating Attendants on the Ice,
• 1 Attendant at the Entry Door,
• 1 Covid-19 Marshal to Direct Patrons and Manage Crowd Congestion.

Skate Collection

Your role is to assist patrons collect the skate for their self and some time the whole family. The skates will be organised by size so they can be easily and quickly found to give to the patrons. There is a size chart to help you identify the skate sizes for the patrons.

There are two types of ice skates:

Strap on for children to wear over their shoes, and
Fully enclosed skates that require socks. Socks can be purchased from you at the services desk.

COVID-19 SAFE NOTE: All skates that have been returned MUST be sprayed with the disinfectant spray to prevent the spread of Covid-19. All patrons must use hand sanitizer before collecting their skates.

Getting onto the Rink

There will be 2 lines:

• Line #1- For Skaters who can skate Unattended
• Line #2 – For skaters who would like a skating aid.
• Line #1 is the priority lane and should be allowed access to the rink immediately.
• Line #2 May be waiting for a skating aid to be returned and therefore will need to wait until one is available.

There are 30 skating aids available.

The staff member who has been assigned to be the “entry gate” attendant is in charge of directing these patrons into the lines. It is also your responsibility to go over the rules of the rink and verbally direct the patrons with some important safety directions.

Rules of the Rink

01. All person’s skate at their own risk
02. You must use hand sanitizer before collecting your skates
03. You must keep your distance of 1.5 meters from other family groups
04. Do not skate if you are pregnant
05. Do not skate if you have existing health condition that could be harmful to your wellbeing while skating
06. Children under 5 years must be accompanied on the ice by an adult at all times
07. If you fall over you must pull your fingers in to avoid collision with other skaters.
08. You must wear socks while skating
09. All Patrons must wear ice skates on the ice at all times – i.e: No walking in shoes
10. Please skate in anti clockwise direction unless advised otherwise
11. No Pushing
12. No Speed or dangerous skating
13. All skaters should be aware of other skaters and maintain a consistent speed of all skaters
14. No carrying of children on the ice
15. No chasing or playing tag on the ice
16. No throwing or spraying of ice
17. No digging holes or damaging of the ice or barriers
18. No sitting on the barriers
19. No Bare Feet
20. No Food, No Drinks, No Texting, No Smoking, No phones or Video Games to be used whilst on the ice
21. No offensive or abusive language
22. Please be courteous and and respectful of all patrons and staff
23. The ice surface may be uneven or wet depending on the weather, as such caution must be exercised.
24. Do not leave valuables un-attended
25. The ice may be wet and you could get wet while participating in skating. A change of clothes is recommended.

Important points to tell the patrons verbally in addition to pointing out the rules of the rink:

• When entering the rink start to skate in an anti-clock wise direction.
• Keep a normal speed in conjunction with other skaters
• If you fall over, pull your fingers in to avoid be run over by other skaters.

Skating Attendants

Your role on the rink is to assist patrons ice skate and to minimise incidents on the rink. You will need to return skating aids to the entry gate ready for new skaters to enter. If a patron losses balance and falls over you must attend to them immediately and see if they are ok. If they are hurt, depending on the circumstance and they can return to the seating are, you can assist them back to this area and then call for first aid if required. If they have a serious injury and do not feel like they can move to the seating area, then radio for first aid to attend on the ice. If there are any wet patches on the rink you must make sure that the traffic cones are in place to avoid this area being used. You may at times need to assist patrons leaving the rink via the exit gate.

Patrons will exit via the exit gates and then walk back to the area they left their shoes to remove skates and put their shoes back on. You may need to assist patrons by returning the skates to the skate service desk to assist to get patrons out of this are as quickly as possible.

Ice Rink Check List (Pre-Operational Check List)

All staff are to read and understand the rules of the rink and the terms and conditions of the Ice skating. You must conduct a visual and manual daily inspection of the rink including but not limited to:

01. Entry /exit areas
02. Fences
03. Conditions of the ice
04. Check for sharp edges
05. Check for tripping hazards
06. Check for rubbish and debre
07. Check that the chiller is functioning probably
08. Check that there is no excess water on the rink
09. Check skates are in good condition
10. Check that skating aids are in good working order
11. Ensure the kiosk area is clean, organised and free of triply g hazards and sharp edges.
12. Check all electrical equipment
13. Check that all seats are clean and set up properly
14. Check that there is no rubbish or tripping hazards in the seating area.
15. Check that all seats, skates, high touch surface areas have been sanitised prior to opening for operation.
16. Check that hand sanitizer is available at all entry points
17. Check that Covid safe signage is visual

Tobogganing Slide Attendants

The tobogganing slide has 2 lanes and at times will have 2 attendants at the top and 1 attendant at the bottom.

Work Flow: The patrons collect their own tubes from the exit gate and carry them up the stairs. The attendants collect the tubes from the patrons and positions it on the loading deck. You must ensure that the tube is facing in the right direct so that the handle is at the back and the patron’s handles are on the front right and left sides. You can direct the patrons to sit down by placing their bottoms into the tube first and then swing their legs to the front. You MUST hold onto the tube by the back handle while the patrons are sitting into the tube. The patron then holds onto the handles and you can lift off the tube and push it forward to be onto the ice ramp to launch off. Once the patron reaches the landing deck, they stand up and move off the landing deck via the exit gate. They next patrons cannot launch from the next land at the top until the landing deck is clear and the last patron has left the area. The attendant at the bottom landing deck MUST give the handles a spray with the disinfectant spray provided before returning them to the collection point for the next patrons.
